Providing garden birds with a safe sanctuary in the form of a bird house and keeping them feed during the winter months is a really worthwhile and enjoyable activity. Ensuring that birds have supplementary food at this time of year will bring them into your garden for you to marvel at their fascinating behaviour and wonderful colours. It will also reward them for sharing their lives with you. A great ‘win-win’ situation. Feeding and accommodating birds is also an ideal way to enthuse children about wildlife.
Here’s a selection of my favourite bird houses and bird feeders. What I like about these is that they are all slightly different and funky in their own way whilst also being practical. Space needn’t be a problem either, even if your outdoor space is a balcony, buy yourself a small bird feeder like the cute mesh owl or bee ones below and soon attract a following of small birds.
Who could fail to be cheered by these charming summer bird houses, above and below, designed in the style of a cute woodland cottage? On the practical side, they come with a hanging rope and a hinged roof lid for adding food and cleaning out.
Beach Hut Bird House
Taking it’s inspiration from the iconic beach hut, this nesting box is ideal for smaller birds such as blue tits and features a hidden hinged side access door for easy cleaning once the nesting birds have flown. This style is perfect for both a traditional and contemporary garden and I’m putting it on my wish list right now!
Retro Caravan Style Birdhouse
What a fab idea for lovers of all things retro! This gorgeous vintage caravan shaped bird house with hanging wire would make an awesome gift for festival loving gardener.
Wooden Apple Bird Feeder
I’m really taken with the timeless simplicity of this apple bird feeder, and it shouldn’t take long for it to become a firm favourite our feathery friends too. Simply skewer an apple and hang the feeder up.
Peanut Bird Feeder
This sweet house shaped peanut feeder has a slate roof and continuous mesh feeding area around the rim, aimed at attracting clinging bird species such as blue tits. I love watching the antics of these smaller birds, especially when they’re trying to prise a piece of peanut out of the mesh.
Space Ship Feeder
Now this one made me smile when I saw it, and who could resist treating our feathered friends to a bird feeder from outer space?
This modern green designer bird house would look fabulous all year round – as a brilliant green accent in a summer garden, or a splash of colour when the trees are left dull and spartan looking in the middle of winter. The feeder comes with a length of cord perfect for hanging it from a trellis or any tree in your garden.
The Owl & The Bumble Bee Bird Feeders
Made from durable metal, these charming owl and bumblebee themed hanging mesh feeders can be used as a focal point beneath a tree, or in th case of the bumblebee, attached to a Flower Stick, and placed amongst your plants in the flowerbed.
As I noted earlier, I also love the idea of using them on a balcony garden. Ideal for use with both sunflower seed and peanuts, they’ll be sure to raise a smile with everyone.
Colourful Ceramic Bird Feeders
Colour pop ceramic bird feeders, I’m in! Chic and minimalist in design, beautifully bold in colour and a fantastic way to keep seeds safe and dry for your visiting garden birds, that’s job done, every box ticked, as far as I’m concerned. And in common with the other bird feeders I’ve featured, they stand alone as an eye-catching feature in their own right amongst the barren branches of a mid winter garden.
Fat Ball Feeding Ring
If you’re looking to attract and feed several birds at once, then the fat ball feeding ring will hold up to ten fat balls at one time within the enclosed wire mesh, which allows for multiple birds to share the feast.Well, that’s the theory. As we all know, birds can be quite territorial, but don’t let this stop you from catering for all, and enjoying the show.
Picture Frame Bird Feeder
And finally, for something completely different. Keep your feathered friends in the picture with this framed bird Feeder. It’s actually a really clever, quirky idea that really works. It consists of a vintage-inspired picture frame with a clever bird feeding platform and a removable bowl hidden behind the base of the frame.
Hang the picture frame with the chain provided and hey presto, when birds come to feed on the seeds in the dish, they are rewarded with food and you have the perfect, ever-changing bird picture. A simple, ingenious idea and a truly original idea for a gift.
